The question caught me off guard. The person asking was someone who I’d never in a million years ever think would admit to listening to a Justin Bieber song, let alone liking it! Yet here he was, quietly asking me over the phone, while we worked on setting up a Juniper router. I had only one answer…
“I know! It’s catchy, and I’m confused because I like it too!”
I’ve been pretty hard on the Biebs over the years. I’m not entirely sure that he deserves the super star status given to him at such a young age. Whatever talent he may or may not possess was greatly overshadowed by his cuteness and the music machine that moulded his public image. Where’s the street cred? Show me the trail of blood, sweat and tears that he overcame to get to where he is today. Like so many great musical geniuses out there… I’m looking at you Britney! And Miley… what happened to you? Come back from the dark side, Miley!
But there’s something about this new album. It’s not even just What Do You Mean? (The song in question, which unfortunately still has a douche-bag music video) but several of the tracks aren’t just tolerable… they’re actually good. I’ve been listening to Love Yourself as well. It’s not quite as catchy, but it’s still good.
So yes, friend… I think it’s fair to say… it’s not wrong to like the new Justin Bieber song… just don’t tell anyone. Or write a blog post about it.
I’ll be the first to admit… I’m one of the people who used to enjoy Taylor Swift’s music, but over the years became quite tired of having her life’s up and downs turned into the latest track from her album. I still think she’s talented. I just don’t want to hear about every single boy toy that comes into her life. I suppose this means her current song is directed at me, just as much as anyone else!
But Shake It Off is catchy! And the video is cute! I like her self-depreciation, and it almost makes me feel bad for the girl. Almost.
The video even features past contestants from So You Think You Can Dance, which is always fun to see. See if you can pick out your favourites!
It’s been awhile since I’ve written anything. I guess that I’ve been focussing on different things. A newsletter for the pickle blog. A zillion updates in Buffer for Twitter, Facebook, even Google+ now. Oh, and then there’s Day One, a fantastic journal program that allows me to jot my thoughts down completely separate from the blog. So I guess that I’m still writing. I’m just not writing as much HERE.
Looking at the current Top 25, there are some things that stand out. Most of the ones near the top are on my Summer 2014 playlist, so it makes sense that they would have more plays than most of the other songs. There are a couple of surprises though. Lose You from Pete Yorn and Desire by Ryan Adams are both songs that I Shazamed from episodes of House. Neither of them are what I would call “happy” songs, which is probably why I fell in love with them. Not saying that I’m not happy! But I like to have my reflective time… and that usually entails some music that’s not exactly upbeat.
Judging from the bottom of the list, I must have had a few reflective times.

I thought that this was a joke when I first saw it. Sadly, it’s not. There’s a music format called QuickHitz that has been used in the USA for about a year on some radio stations, and it’s now made its way across the border and into a mainstream radio market.
What is Quickhitz? It’s a method of shrinking the typical 3-4 minute song down to 2 minutes in a way that apparently people don’t really notice. This way they can squeeze more songs into a shorter amount of time. The goal is 24 songs per hour.
Unbelievable. I know that we live in a world of sound bites and short YouTube clips, but has our attention span really shrunk to the point where we can’t listen to a full song for 4 minutes?
I was listening to their online stream yesterday, and it was sad how quickly the music changed. I’ll admit the song selection was great, but I want to hear the full songs, and not feel like I’m just listening to a mashup. From the looks of Twitter, I’d say that I’m not alone. If you’re curious, give it a listen here. (I think it gets a little congested at times, but you’ll get the idea)[polldaddy poll=8236255]
I know that my opinion isn’t shared by some of the people who will be reading this. That’s ok, though. It’s just my opinion. You can have your own. But remember, mine’s better! 😉
I didn’t grow up with comic books. I had a couple that I acquired from yard sales but I was never serious about them. So when movie studios started focusing more on super hero titles, some of them have been hit or miss for me. (Check out my blog posts on Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3 if you’re bored) Guardians of the Galaxy is a miss for me.
I didn’t dislike the movie. There is some really funny dialogue in there. But aside from that… I found Guardians of the Galaxy to be quite lacking. I think the best way to describe it is that it didn’t feel like a Marvel movie to me. It felt like another movie franchise entirely, much like when you watch an animated movie that is good, but just not the same caliber as Disney or Pixar. I suspect that part of this comes from the fact that I knew absolutely nothing about these characters going in. I don’t think that I’m alone, though. This isn’t Iron Man.
I have no doubt that this movie will spawn sequels for the next few years. It’s making gobs of money at the box office, and I seem to be one of the few people who wasn’t completely blown away. So I’ll watch the next installment when it comes out… online.
If I had to rate it out of 10, I’d give Guardians of the Galaxy a 6.5.
“Weird Al” is back with a new (and potentially last, due to contractual completeness) album! The first release from Mandatory Fun pretty much channels everything from my Grammar Snobs, Unite! post and makes it sound catchy! 🙂 That’s right… Word Crimes takes last summer’s Blurred Lines and spins it into a parody of how sloppy we’ve become in the age of internet writing… <- WTF?!? You can’t end a sentence with THREE periods! That’s sloppy writing! Yes. Yes it is… And if THAT makes you want to cringe uncontrollably and hide behind your Webster’s Dictionary (what’s that?) then I’d love to watch as you listen to this song for the first time! Try to pick out a few of the no-nos that you probably do. I know there are a couple of my little gems in there!
I have to admit though – as clever as the video is, I was really hoping to see Emily Ratajkowski make a cameo appearance… even if clothed.
I love stories like this. This song was released in their native Norway (Yes… I said Norway. I know what you’re thinking. They appear quite un-Viking-like) back in April 2013 and peaked at #2 in Norway, Denmark and Sweden. After that the song didn’t do much, until it was released in American in April 2014. Even then it was a slow climb up the charts. Apparently it’s the #2 song in Canada right now, and I don’t think that I’ve ever heard it on the radio. What’s up with that?
This video was shot in Botswana with the goal of showing Africa in a positive light because much of what we are shown in media is fairly negative. Some of the scenery is breath-taking. Watch it and tell me… Am I wrong? 🙂
Look who’s back with another awesome music video! Although this song has been around for a little while, I really haven’t paid it much attention until this weekend after I added the video to my iTunes collection. Now I’m hooked! I changed my ring tone and my text tone. Haha… I’m so fancy! Who dat? Who dat? IGGY.
If I was ever going to write a song, this would be it! It’s been a long time since I’ve listened to a song on straight repeat, but Demons by Imagine Dragons is something that I can’t turn off. The only thing wrong with this song is that it’s too damn short! 2 minutes and 53 seconds?! It’s not one of my favourite videos, but that’s ok. The lyrics pierce through me.
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
My kids watch a lot of iCarly. If you don’t know what that is… you probably don’t have young kids. Trust me on this… you’re not missing much. But when I was walking past the TV last night, I heard the characters talking about European Swimsuit Models… and I naturally stopped in my tracks.
“I’ve gotta see this” I said as I plopped myself down on the couch. Both of my kids looked at me strangely. I normally don’t watch iCarly with them. But European Swimsuit Models… not gonna pass that up. One of them asked me if I wanted to see the swimsuit models. Well duh… Why else would I still be here? So the show plodded on for a few mins while I sat patiently waiting… until the big reveal…
I got up immediately and left the living room… with both of my evil children howling in laughter behind me… apparently they’d both seen this episode before and were quite enjoying watching me fall into the trap…
So they’re now grounded for life.
