Who Do You Think You Are?

Published July 17, 2010 - 3 Comments

I was watching So You Think You Can Dance a couple of weeks ago, and I heard a song come on that I had never heard before.  That’s not all that unusual.  It happens from time to time.  If I like it, I usually scribble it down on a piece of paper and then go look for it later.  And that’s exactly what I did this time.  It had an interesting title.. Jar of Hearts.  And some interesting lyrics…

And who do you think you are
Running around leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You’re gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don’t come back for me
Who do you think you are

So the next day I bought the song on iTunes, and listened to it a few times.  It’s nice.  Different from what’s normally on the radio.  I really didn’t give it much thought again… until recently.

I noticed an article somewhere on the net about the singer, Christina Perri.  And that’s when it got really interesting.  Apparently she’s a 23 year old working in LA at a cafe, waiting for her big break…  an unsigned artist, presumably struggling to make ends meet… and one of her friends gave her demo tape to a SYTYCD choreographer (Stacey Tookey, from SYTYCD Canada!)  Stacey created a wonderful routine with the song, and it aired on the show…

Apparently I wasn’t the only one who went to iTunes to download Jar of Hearts, because suddenly the unknown artist has sold over 100,000 copies of that song almost overnight!   A few weeks ago she was working in a coffee shop.  Now she’s making television appearances, answering 100 emails a day, and finishing her EP.  She’s also supposed to be performing the song on SYTYCD  (I’m behind in my viewing again, so I don’t know if this has happened yet or not).  Not too shabby.  Not too shabby at all.

I like reading stories like that one…

(There is no video, as of yet, for the song.  This YouTube link is an audio-only performance.)
