Big Ben is NOT a Clock!

Published September 19, 2010 - 4 Comments

Am I the only person who knows that London’s Big Ben is not a clock?  Oh sure, people automatically think of the large clock tower when they think of Big Ben… it’s natural.  Even I do that.  But then I rationalize it with the cold hard fact that Big Ben is not the clock.  It’s only a part of the building. More specifically…

Big Ben is the BELL.

This lack of obscure knowledge became painfully apparent to me after gently correcting my daughter… I thought that it would be good for her to know the truth about Big Ben.  Let Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy remain a part of her youthful innocence, but dash Big Ben right away!  But as I was recounting that story to someone else, I was horrified to learn that even adults were blissfully unaware of the true identity of Big Ben!  And not simply one adult!  Oh no!  This was not an isolated case!  A quick informal poll proved it all… Big Ben misinformation was rampant!  In fact, I was starting to question whether or not *I* was correct… Surely not all of these seemingly intelligent people could have fallen prey to the Big Ben clock conspiracy.  Maybe it was me?  Maybe I was wrong!  There was only one thing to do… turn to the internet… the lone bastion of truth remaining in this universe.

I was right.  They were wrong.  All is well again.

And here he is… in all his chiming glory… I offer you… Big Ben!
