Christmas 2012: Getting Shit Done

Published December 8, 2012 - 12 Comments

I decided to take yesterday off, and dedicate it to getting the bulk of my Christmas shopping done.  I knew that I’d never get ALL of it.. there will still be a few little odds and ends to pick up between now and then… but I wanted to get the majority of it done, so I could avoid the malls until the middle of next year.

And guess what?  It worked!

I didn’t sleep in until noon.  I was actually standing in Indigo at 9:07am with a few other dedicated shoppers, going through some book ideas that I had in mind.  I left there with over $200 worth of books and games.  It sure doesn’t take long to add up!

I won’t bore you with all the details of my day, but I will hit upon a few of the highlights.

  • Walmart in east Saint John wasn’t quite the zoo that I know it can be.  In years past I have walked in, only to immediately turn around and walk out.  I can’t be bothered to push my way through crowds of shoppers.  That wasn’t the case yesterday.  It was busy, but it wasn’t insane.  But give it time!
  • The new Walmart on the west side is a breath of fresh air compared to its east side counterpart.  This is one of Walmart’s acquisitions from the Zeller’s selloff.  It’s nice in there, but as people had already told me… it’s not laid out like a Walmart at all.  It’s laid out like a Zeller’s, except with blue paint, and yellow smiley faces announcing rollback prices.  I didn’t see a single Walmart greeter… what’s up with that?  Still, it was quiet.
  • No Frills grocery store (formerly Real Atlantic Super Store) on the west side doesn’t have plastic bags to carry out your groceries.  Wish I had known that before standing there like a tool wondering how to get my stuff out of there.  They do have boxes though… yup.
  • I surprised my doctor and her office staff by showing up with a beautiful poinsettia and card thanking them for everything that they’ve done.  Dr Lisa is an amazing person and I’ve been in there way too often lately to see her.  Her staff has been excellent in trying to get me booked in when something comes up last minute, and I wanted them to know how much I appreciated it.  The smiles on their faces were more than enough for me.  Love seeing that.

That’s pretty much it… except for the pointy elf slippers that I picked up at Walmart.  Imagine Mrs Claus’ surprise when she came home and found me in the kitchen dressed like that.  Ladies, never laugh at your man when he’s wearing silk boxer shorts with Homer Simpson Santas… That’s just rude!  😉

All I Want For Christmas Is… An iPad

Published December 10, 2010 - 1 Comment
Dear Santa, I’ve Been Good-ish This Year

The big day is just around the corner!  Another 15 days until Ho-Ho comes to visit me.  Then again, after the year I’ve had, maybe he will skip over my house, or worse drop a big reindeer poop on my lawn.  But in the event that he is feeling somewhat forgiving, I’ve compiled a list of a few things that I would like from the jolly fat bastard.

First it was an iPod… then another iPod… then the iPhone… followed by the iMac… each of these Apple devices have been a little slice of heaven in their own way.  It seems only natural to extend the trend to the iPad tablet!  I’m not looking for anything too fancy.  The 16 GB non-3G model is perfectly fine for my needs.  Anything more than that would be over-kill.  I don’t ever see myself loading it up with so many videos that 16 GB wouldn’t be enough storage.  And I really can’t imagine taking the iPad anywhere that I would need a 3G connection.  It probably wouldn’t leave the house, and if it did, there are enough wifi connections around to get me by.
But what would I actually dowith an iPad, you ask?  Just imagine how awesome Words With Friends would look!  Or downloading my daily blog RSS feeds!  Looking at pictures, or checking my email quickly.  Yes, these are all things that I can already do with my iMac, iPhone.. or even my laptop running Linux, but that’s not the point!  The iPad does these things in style!  And all for the low, low price of $499.99 CDN.  It’s hard to argue with those numbers!  You can never have too much style!
So Santa, please… if you are reading this…  have a heart.  I’ve had a tough year.  I need this.  Hell, I deserve this!  My Words With Friends play has improved greatly, but it could be so much better with an iPad.  Remember, Christmas is about the joy of giving… so give me a damn iPad…  please.
Thanks Santa…

The Holiday Season is Fast Approaching…

Published November 30, 2010 - 6 Comments

You may have noticed a tiny change in the appearance of this blog.  Some of the less recent readers may recognize the holiday theme from last year.  Yes, I kept a copy of it in the WordPress theme directory, so I could pull it out this year!  I like it.  I haven’t given up on Thesis, but let’s face it… out of the box, Thesis is pretty boring to look at!  If I had any amount of web design skill at all, I could customize it to look better… hell, I could probably even make it look Christmasy if I knew what I was doing.  But I don’t, so I need a theme that does all of that for me.  This one looks nice, is relevant, and easy to use.  Behind the scenes, it’s basic compared to Thesis, but that’s fine.  I wanted to spice things up as we turn the corner and head into the final stretch before the Big Guy (Santa) gets here.  That’s right.. it’s less than a month away now.  Sorry to bust your bubble, folks.  I know that some of you have not even started your shopping yet.  Then there’s my Mum, who has probably been done and wrapped since August.

Yeah… didn’t inherit that gene.

Christmas Theme

With the Big Day less than a month away, I thought that I would update the look of the blog, and find something a little more festive.  There’s no shortage of Holiday themes out there to pick from.  This one is called “Blue Christmas” and I like how the snowflakes fall in the header portion.

Change is good, right?
