Please note: This post contains spoilers! If you plan on watching this movie, I suggest that you stop reading now.
Battle: Los Angeles wastes no time in getting right to the action. The opening scene is combat… a news anchor voice saying that the earth is in a fight for its survival.
Aliens have come for one of our precious resources. I’ll let you decide which one. The western coast of the US is being overrun (along with other major areas worldwide), with the focus of the film solely on the battle for Los Angeles.
The battle scenes are quite good! I love that whole “jerking camera motion” that makes you feel like you’re part of the action as they run around.
All in all, I liked Battle: Los Angeles, and am glad that I saw it in the theatre. It really is one of those “bigger is better” movies… bigger screen.. bigger sound…
But, I do have a couple of things that bothered me a little about it. The aliens are not impervious to traditional ammunition… which is fine. But what I thought was strange is that the military in general seemed to have a really hard time taking them on with their heavy firepower… yet a small squad of Marines could kill them with M16s and grenades. Mind you, it was still quite a fight. It’s not like the aliens just fell over when the Marines shot them… but I found it strange that a grenade could kill a couple.. yet we kept seeing images of burnt-out tanks and heavy equipment that didn’t seem to be able to stand up to the aliens.
And why didn’t they launch missiles at the mother ships? Conventional weapons seemed to be effective.. so it’s not like they even needed to use tactical nukes… regular missiles would have worked just fine.
I was very happy to see that the director passed on the chance for a romantic ending, which would have been cheesy. There was potential for that, but that’s not what happened.
If you want to feel like you’re in the middle of a video game, and watch some aliens get blasted go see Battle: Los Angeles. It’s not going to win any Academy awards, but it’s fun!
