The Snowglobe…

Published June 8, 2009 - 2 Comments

You see it sitting on the shelf.  It looks so perfect.  So peaceful.  A picturesque setting, shielded from the outside world by a thin layer of glass.  Left alone, it exists as a thing of beauty. A snapshot in time.

But you can’t leave it alone, can you?

No.  The urge to pick it up is too strong.  You hold it in your hand and look at it one last time before shaking it violently.  Inside, the once peaceful scene erupts into chaos.  You set it down, and watch as the snowflakes continue to swirl behind the glass, gradually losing momentum…  until at last, they settle to the bottom.

And, although the scene soon appears as it once did… it is not.  The snowflakes have fallen in a completely new pattern.  A new scene has been created, leaving the old one behind. For better or worse, the change can never be undone.

And there it sits.

Until you reach for it once more…

Shut Up and Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is!

That’s part of the chorus from the new Katy Perry song “Waking Up In Vegas”… my new “it” song… It’s kind of a fun song for the summer. My iPod is becoming very familiar with it. 🙂

I’d like if some of my Canadian readers could click on this link and place a vote for my sister in the SavvyMom Entrepreneur online contest. She really does put in a hell of a lot of work. I don’t know how she does it. I definitely could not. So please, if you have 60 seconds to spare, please click the link and vote for Jen. Many thanks!

Bye Bye, Mon Cowboy!

Now there’s a reference that will probably go over most people’s heads. I’m sitting here listening to some music on my iPod. I’m in the mood for something a little different than the stuff that I’ve been listening to recently. Dust off the old 80s and 90s happy music. Happy music? Who would have thought that I even had happy music? But alas, yes.. hidden within the depths of my hard drive are a few (OK, maybe more than a few) tunes that are a departure from the norm.

Remember Mitsou? Probably not. Although I know at least one or two of you do. Oh Mitsou. What ever happened to you? Bye Bye, Mon Cowboy…. Quebec’s answer to Samantha Fox at the time… Yes, there was another Fox before Megan Fox lent her formidable acting chops to Transformers. Speaking of Transformers, don’t forget to mark your calendar. June 26th. The new movie comes out. I don’t quite get the butterflies in my stomach from these previews that I did when the first movie was released, but I will still suffer through the horrible lines and over-priced popcorn to see it. Such is the life that I live.

Oooh… It’s So Pretty…

Published June 4, 2009 - 1 Comment

I’ve had a few comments about how “pretty” the blog’s new look is. I’ll admit that it is definitely more visually appealing now, but I feel a little guilty taking any credit for the new and improved look. For people who don’t already know, one of the great things about WordPress is the seemingly endless number of free themes available. I’m sure that Blogger has themes too, but I didn’t have much luck with that platform. Once I finally figured out how to get WordPress installed properly finding themes was easy. Installing them was even easier. I downloaded a few and dropped them in the hosting directory. Now I can switch between different themes with a single click, and what you see today may not necessarily be what you see tomorrow. But for now, I like the way that it looks.

Anyone who knows me well realizes that my creative talents do not extend to graphic artistry. My infamous stick-man drawings are about as good as it gets. WordPress themes are a godsend for someone with my limited abilities (and even more limited patience).

This is a work in progress, and as always, I look forward to hearing from people who are much more familiar with this than I am. If you know of some fantastic new theme, widget, or website… please leave me a comment. Maybe we can all learn something here.

Thanks for reading!

It’s Official… 19 Years in the Making…

I stopped at the Registrar’s office this morning, and said to the girl “I believe that you have a piece of paper with my name on it…”

As she started to look through the pile of diplomas, I heard her say “Hmm.. that’s odd”   Uh oh.    Then she asked me “Did you check to make sure your name was on the graduation list?”

Oh, this was not going well.

“Um no, I did not.”

She seemed surprised.  The Registrar’s office number had been going nuts with people wanting to know if they had graduated.  Well apparently I have a little more patience than most people.  19 years of waiting will do that to you.

It didn’t take her too long to find it.  “Stephen Mark?”  Yup!  That’s me.  She set it on the counter in front of me.

And there is was…  in all its Latin glory. I couldn’t understand a single word of what it said, but I understood its significance all too well.

I was done.  Finally.

A New Look… For a New Beginning…

Published June 2, 2009 - 0 Comments

I’ve decided that the blog needed an overhaul. Something drastic. I ditched the old Blogger platform, and have decided to try to make some sense of WordPress. So far it doesn’t seem to be too bad. I’m pretty sure that its capabilities far surpass my requirements, so I will dabble a little until I’m comfortable with it.

My main reason for switching to WordPress is that there are several other projects being brought on board, and this blog will serve as a testing area for things that I want to incorporate into other sites.

Out with the old… In with the new…
