How to Configure Bell Sympatico Email on an iPhone

[Update 9 Apr 12: I have to say, when I originally sat down to write this post, I did not expect it to get nearly as many hits as it does. Apparently more people run into problems with this sort of thing than I realized. I hope that the instructions located here do help. If so, please consider showing your support by clicking a sponsor link, or passing this post along to someone else who may benefit from it. Thanks!]

I recently had the displeasure of trying to figure out how to get Sympatico email configured properly on a new iPhone 4S.  I’ll state the obvious to get it out of the way up front… WHY anyone would want to do this is beyond me.  Short of some sentimental attachment to an existing email address, I can think of no reason why someone would want to use an email service that appears to run on POP only.  POP is a dinosaur, and really needs to be taken on a one-way trip out to the pasture.  At the very least you could set your Sympatico email to forward to GMail, Yahoo, Hotmail or whatever other reliable (and IMAP) email service you want to use.

But that wasn’t an option.  Neither was failure.  I had hyped my technical skills to the point of saying “No one else can get it working?  Let me take a look at it… *I* can get it working…”

Bell’s technical support page recommends that you access your email through a mobile browser.  Makes sense.  No configuration necessary.  Doesn’t help when trying to set up an email client, though!  So I hit the net, trying to find someone who may have the answer.

[UPDATE 8 Apr 12: The blog that I discovered the instructions on no longer seems to be active, which is a shame.  I'm glad that I found it when I did, because it was a huge help to me, and hopefully to others.  I have decided to keep the links to that blog within this post in the event that it comes back online in the future.]

I found a lot of conflicting information.  And then I found Trevor Watkinson’s blog.  His post Smart Phone Email Server Settings For Sympatico And Bell Aliant Emailwas very clearly laid out, and contained almost everything that I needed.  I say “almost” because I don’t see any mention of SSL settings in his post, and I was unable to get the iPhone to move past the VERIFYING stage until I removed the check-marks in SSL for incoming and outgoing mail.I’ve copied these settings from Trevor’s post.  He also has settings for other Atlantic provinces, so if you are from outside NB you can find those settings here.Settings in italics are the ones that I needed to get the iPhone 4S working with NB Sympatico.Interested in receiving 100 tips to help you get the most out of your iPhone? New Brunswick Email Server Settings

Incoming Mail Server Name: pop.bellaliant.net
Incoming Mail Server Port: 110

Outgoing Mail Server Name: smtp.bellaliant.net
Outgoing Mail Server Name For Android: mail.1xbell.ca
Outgoing Mail Server Port: 25

Mail Server Username:

  • for @bellaliant email addresses: emailprefix@bellaliant.net
  • for @nb.sympatico.ca email addresses: emailprefix@nb.sympatico.ca
  • for @nbnet.nb.ca email addresses: emailprefix@nbnet.nb.ca

And as I discovered… try turning SSL off if you are still unable to send/receive email.

Hopefully this helps anyone who runs into this problem… but really… do yourself a favour… Sign up for a GMail account.  If you want to keep your Sympatico email address because you’ve had it since the beginning of time and you’re not ready to part with it yet (like say… an old sweater… or ROOTS hat) then set it up to forward your mail to GMail or another service, and install THAT service on your smartphone.  You’ll still get all your Sympatico email, and won’t have to change your email address, yet you won’t run into the headaches like this.

POP is dead.

Please take a second to let me know if you found this blog post helpful or not.  My blog’s success is determined by my readers.  Thank you for reading  :-)

OR… you setup your gMail to check your sympatico email for you and then just add your gMail to your phone. It’s easier that way.

That would also work!

Bahahaha! Who the hell would still have a sympatico address in this day and age?

I was wondering when I’d make it to one of your effin’ blog posts!

Thanks a lot for the mention here Stephen! I really appreciate it and I’m glad I could help!

@JennM: You would be surprised how many people still have sympatico email addresses. I worked as a District Team Leader for five cellular stores for the past three years and found that setting up old email addresses like sympatico was the most common issue I encountered.

If it’s such a common problem, the why the heck can’t the CSRs at Bell Mobility help when you call them??? I spent almost an hour on the phone with them and got no where. Thank God for Stephen! :-)

You’re welcome, Kim. I know how frustrating it can be, and it’s usually just a little setting somewhere that makes all the difference. Glad I could help.

OMG STEPHEN i spent all day fighting with this. Thanks sooooo much. And to the idiot who remarked about having the why would some one have same old sympatico address we have no reason to change it if we aren’t hiding from anyone . Changing it seems like a big deal when everything we do is connected to it.

Hello all, I had replace my iPhone 4 and I had no problem setting up my mail to link with sympatico. It started reloading my received emails, but the sent messages I have in my sympatico sent mailbox will not reload to my iPhone. I thought that they reloaded like in coming emails??? Is there something I’m missing… I am to create and send emails. I just would like my previously sent emails to show on the new phone… any thoughts?

Hi Rick… you stumped me on this one! I don’t know why the sent items aren’t syncing… I would think that they would too.

I am in NL with an iPhone 4s and a sympatico account and I cannot get it set up on my phone. I tried the link for the settings in other Atlantic provinces but it appears to be disabled. Can you help? Do you have the settings for NL?? Thanks for any help you can offer!

Hi Dana,

It took some digging, but I found a little information. I am not sure how dated this is, so I can’t swear that it will work for you.. but I’d love to hear back either way. I’m considering putting a little ebook together to make it super simple for people to get their email working, and I’d love to hear from people who have tried these settings to know whether they worked or not.

Incoming: pop1.nf.sympatico.ca
Outgoing: smtp1.nf.sympatico.ca

Good luck!

I struggled with this too for my nb.stmpatico account. This is finally what worked for me pop.bellaliant.net and
And pop.bellaliant.net. It also worked on my iPad.

Hi Joanne,

Just want to clarify something.. do you mean that you used pop.bellaliant.net for your incoming and smtp.bellaliant.net for your outgoing server? You have pop.bellaliant.net there twice, and generally smtp is the outgoing.. but Sympatico doesn’t seem to want to make this easy, so who knows… Just looking for clarification. Thanks! :-)

Joanne December 28, 2012 at 10:14 am

Yes should i have been smtp.bellaliant.net I musta been still turkey drunk. Also I find if I have this mail acct turned on my phone it will not let me get or use that acct on the iPad. It will say is being used by another device. Easy fix is just turn it off in the settings.

Patrice December 28, 2012 at 8:24 pm

I can receive but not send did anyone find the issue with this?

Chalosca January 24, 2013 at 1:36 pm

You’re right that POP is dead.
I helped someone who call Bell many and many times.
She also called Apple many and many times.
Noone told her to select IMAP and no POP as the incoming mail server.
The name itself is POP.bellaliant.net how someone would know to change to IMAP?

I found your post and solved it right away.

Thanks a lot……
