Loser Like Me (Glee Goes Original)

by Stephen on March 22, 2011

I’m a Gleek.  That’s not news.  Some of my friends will roll their eyes and stop reading right here.  The rest might read a little longer… a tiny few might even read to the very bottom and even click on the videos.  Chances are, those people have already seen them in last week’s episode titled “Original Song”.

So, despite that fact that I’m now a self-described Gleek, I’ve always taken issue with the cover songs they sing being included in music charts, especially when they broke the records previously held by The Beatles…  I think that many of their versions of popular songs are at least equal (if not superior) to the originals… but I don’t believe that it’s right that they can release a half dozen songs every episode that shoot up the charts and knock out legitimate artists from their positions.  Well, last week Glee took a huge step forward toward credibility by debuting two new original songs.

I’m not surprised that they chose to play it safe and go primarily with their brightest star, Lea Michele.  I’m convinced that girl can sing anything you throw at her, and I will happily buy it.  She’s oozing with legitimate talent (not a pretty image, I know) and has a huge future ahead of her.  So having her take the lead in their first venture into original material was really no-brainer.  But it worked!  The songs are good.  The singing is great.  The two of them combine for an emotional roller coaster, which obviously appeals to moi.  Get it Right tears you down a little… pulls back the outer layers… exposes parts of you that you might want to hide…  everyone’s been there…    and Loser Like Me is incredibly catchy and builds you back up.. ending on a high note…   Kudos… Both these songs are proud new entries in my iTunes library. I really wish that they sold videos of the Glee songs, though. I’d love to have these (and a few of the others) in great quality.

Even if you’re not a huge fan of Glee, I encourage you to take a listen to the songs and maybe even leave a comment… honest feedback is always welcome!

I read to the bottom, but did not click on the videos…and that’s all you’re gonna get out of me on the subject :)

That’s unfortunate… because you completely missed the point of the post… you, as an avid Glee-hater, are the perfect type of person to say whether the original songs could stand on their own as legitimate songs… or not… I know that your favourite music is more classic rock, but you also have a bit of an appreciation for other stuff as well…

OK, so I actually went and listened to the songs, and they weren’t too bad! I really liked the first one; it was pretty well as you described it, and I can’t really add much to what you said. It was a thinking song, something to listen to when you want to reflect on things. Oh, and I was thinking all along, “She sounds like someone…but WHO?” Strange or not, her voice reminded me of Leanne Rimes in “Can’t Fight the Moonlight”! The second song just wasn’t my taste, but it is bubbly and peppy; a stark contrast to the first song, IMO. I give them credit for doing original songs; hopefully they’ll stick with more of that! :)

I love that you have embraced your inner Gleek, you are in wonderful company.
I loved the original songs and hope they do more, however that being said I love love love the remakes and the mash-ups.
Honestly I think they can do no wrong, maybe a few more show tunes would be good… (wink wink)

The mashups are quite good… I wish that they did more of those… the show tunes… hmmm… I could stand a little less… although lately I don’t think that there have been many from that category.

Ok Stephen I listened to both songs. Not surprising you liked them. LOL you were always a sap when it came to music. But for these songs…. Goose bumps… is all I have to say. They were really well done and I can see more ‘original’ songs in their future. I am just sorry I missed watching it when it aired on television.

A sap?? Hey wait just a second… how do YOU know… Cecile? Oh.. I guess that explains it.. Welcome to the blog :-)

I will admit.. I got goosebumps when the first song came on… the second one not so much, but only because it’s happier… but ironically enough, the second one is the one that I’ve listened to the most since I bought them.

I will drop off copies of the episodes that you’ve missed so you can get caught up. Yeah.. I’m nice like that… :-)

That’s when you play Ceelo Green’s Fuck You song over and over… it’s one of my favs!

And wow… a rare grammar mistake in your comment… I wonder if it’s a simply typo, or if you’re really one of those “had of” people who I want to round up and beat with a dictionary… I will give you the benefit of the doubt because you’re my sister… and I’m a sap..

Man am I happy to find another man that’s in his mid 30′s that watches glee, will publicly admit he is a gleek and loves sappy songs. I thought I was the only one that had to put up with society questioning my sexuality. But no more, here we are together…gleeks always.

Sorry to burst your bubble but you shouldn’t even be singing and dancing with the worst of them. I’ve heard you
